Nope! The thickness and flatness are perfectly designed so it won't interfere with tracking, sound quality, or record wear. There may be a few odd automation functions that won't work perfectly on obscure turntables, but in 99% of cases no. Perfectionists are welcome to make slight tonearm adjustments; however, in our testing, this has proven unnecessary and makes no audible difference.
Vinylessence™ is compatible with the vast majority of turntable brands including Audio-Technica, Sony, Victrola, Crosley, Numark, Technics, Pioneer, and more.
As long as your turntable uses a standard 11–12 inch slipmat, and not an abnormally short spindle. However, testing is always ongoing. We plan to work with the community to get a spreadsheet together from backer feedback on the first batch to gather a complete list of compatible turntable models. Just because your brand is listed above, does not guarantee every model will support it.
Absolutely. The top surface is smooth anti-static acrylic just like any other acrylic slipmat designed to be gentle on all records. All internal electronics are fully enclosed and protected.
Nope. No tools, no modifications, no wiring. Drop Vinylessence™ on your platter, place your record on top, and power it on.
Battery life depends on color mode and brightness. With the 4000mAh battery, typical runtimes are 13–16 hours on a single charge, with testing and improvements ongoing.
Nope. No more remotes! Everything is controlled through the app for reliability and convenience. A physical button is also on the side of the shell for manual operation.
Vinylessence™ was designed to please as many people as possible. So yes, it can slip! There are also included (and completely optional) silicone grip feet that can attach to the slipmat through specially designed recesses on the bottom of the shell for those who prefer more grip to the platter. Is every DJ going to like Vinylessence™? Probably not, but it was designed to offer flexibility so more people can enjoy using it their way, collectors and DJs alike.
Usually no, unless your turntable has an unusually tall spindle. Even in that case, the weight of the Vinylessence™ slipmat is already designed to be in the typical range of a record weight (1lb), so adding another weight would be comparable to stacking two weights and is generally not recommended.
In most cases yes, slight warping is totally acceptable and will not affect normal use. However, heavily warped records, especially ones with dish-warping, may not always work and could possibly prevent proper contact and alignment.
The current prototype is just 8.5mm! For the shipping units we will be shaving off another 2mm off the design so it will be even thinner!
There are real physical limits when designing something this slim. Components like the edge-mounted USB-C port and charging board, and on-board microphone, require a fixed minimum thickness. They also must sit beneath the internal diffusion layers to keep the lighting perfectly even, and without a suspiciously USB-C shaped cutout/deadspot in the surface lighting when viewed from above.
We could have theoretically mounted it on the bottom of the center core, but then you'd end up with another apple computer mouse debacle, requiring you to pick the whole slipmat up, flip it over, cover the acrylic surface with dust, and plug it in, and flip it back over when it's done. All just to charge it!
We wanted it to be streamlined, hassle-free, and keep unnecessary dust and household grime off your slipmat and records. No need to pick it up, just plug it in!
The current design balances ultra-thin form with consistent, high-quality, even illumination.
Absolutely not. LEDs generate very minimal heat, and are very different than incandescent light. You should barely be able to feel anything with your finger pressed on the very center light source. Let alone the 60°C (140°F) it takes to even start to warp a record.
Record clamp compatibility depends solely on spindle length. So it will work on turntables with slightly longer spindles because enough exposed spindle is required for the clamp to engage properly. Spindle lengths vary between turntable brands and models, so record clamp compatibility can vary case by case.
